URL Encoder and Decoder

Percent-encode text for use in a URL, or decode %20 and similar codes back to readable text.

  • Free
  • No sign-up
  • Runs in your browser

Your text is processed in this page and is never sent anywhere.

How to use URL Encoder and Decoder

How to use this tool:

  • Choose Encode or Decode.
  • Say what you have: a part of a URL (such as a query value), a whole URL, or form data.
  • Type or paste your text. The result appears at once; press "Copy result".

Which mode? "Part of a URL" encodes everything except letters, digits and - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ). "Whole URL" keeps the characters that structure an address, such as / ? & = and #. "Form data" is like a part, but writes a space as +.

Tip. Encode only once. Encoding text that is already encoded turns % into %25.

Examples

  • A query value

    a=1&b=Jack & Jill becomes a%3D1%26b%3DJack%20%26%20Jill as a part of a URL.

  • Non-English text

    café becomes caf%C3%A9.

  • Form data

    a b+c becomes a+b%2Bc.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the three modes?

A part of a URL escapes every reserved character. A whole URL leaves the address structure alone. Form data also turns spaces into plus signs.

Why did my text become %2520?

It was encoded twice. Encode once, and decode once.

Why does a space sometimes appear as +?

That is the form-data convention. In other parts of a URL a space is %20.

Why does decoding fail?

A % must be followed by two hex digits, and the bytes must make valid UTF-8 text.
