Base64 Encoder and Decoder

Encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 back to text, including the URL-safe form and non-English characters.

  • Free
  • No sign-up
  • Runs in your browser

Base64 is a way of writing data, not a way of hiding it: anyone can decode it. Your text is processed in this page and is never sent anywhere.

How to use Base64 Encoder and Decoder

How to use this tool:

  • Choose Encode or Decode.
  • Type or paste your text (or your Base64) on the left.
  • Read the result on the right and press "Copy result".
  • When encoding, pick the standard alphabet, or the URL-safe one with or without = padding.

Details. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes first, so Hindi, accented letters and emoji work. When decoding, either alphabet is accepted, padding may be missing, and spaces and line breaks are ignored. If the Base64 holds a file rather than text, the tool says so.

Remember. Base64 is not encryption. Anyone can decode it.

Examples

  • Encode hello

The Base64 of hello is aGVsbG8=.

  • Decode Zm9vYmFy

    The text is foobar.

  • A URL-safe example

The text ??>> is Pz8+Pg== in standard Base64 and Pz8-Pg in URL-safe form without padding.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 a way to keep data secret?

No. It only changes the form of the data, and anyone can decode it. Use encryption for secrets.

Why is the Base64 longer than my text?

Every 3 bytes become 4 characters, so the data grows by about a third.

What is the URL-safe form?

It uses - and _ instead of + and /, so the text can be put in a URL or file name. The = padding is often left off.

Does it work with Hindi or emoji?

Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 before it is converted, so any language round-trips.
