Hash Generator (SHA-256 and more)

Get the SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of any text, and check them against a hash you were given.

  • Free
  • No sign-up
  • Runs in your browser
SHA-1(old: fine for checksums, not for security)
SHA-256
SHA-384
SHA-512

The text is converted to bytes as UTF-8 and hashed in this page. It is never sent anywhere. Do not use these plain hashes to store passwords.

How to use Hash Generator (SHA-256 and more)

How to use this tool:

  • Type or paste your text. All four hashes update as you type.
  • Press a Copy button to copy one.
  • To check a download or a value, paste the published hash into the compare box. The tool says whether it matches.

Details. The text is converted to UTF-8 bytes and hashed in your browser with its built-in crypto. The comparison ignores case and spaces. A trailing newline or different line ending changes the hash.

Not for passwords. Plain hashes are fast, which is wrong for storing passwords. Use Argon2, scrypt, bcrypt or PBKDF2 for that. SHA-1 is old and should not be used for security.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my hash differ from another program's?

Usually a trailing newline, a different line ending or a different text encoding. This tool hashes the exact text as UTF-8.

Can a hash be reversed?

No, but short or common inputs can be found by trying guesses.

Which algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 for new work. SHA-1 only to match an older system.

Can I hash a file?

This tool hashes text only. Nothing is uploaded.
