Password Generator

Make a strong random password of 8 to 64 characters in your browser, with nothing stored or sent.

  • Free
  • No sign-up
  • Runs in your browser

From 8 to 64 characters. Longer is stronger.

Include

The password is made in this page using your browser’s secure random number generator. It is not stored or sent anywhere.

Choose a length and at least one kind of character to make a password.

How to use Password Generator

How to use this generator:

  • Set the length, from 8 to 64 characters. 16 or more is a good choice for important accounts.
  • Tick the kinds of character to include.
  • Tick "Avoid look-alike characters" if you will read or type the password by hand.
  • Press "Generate another" for a new one, then "Copy".

How it works. The password is made in this page with your browser's secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Every character is chosen with equal chance, and the password is drawn again if it misses one of the kinds you ticked. Nothing is stored, logged or sent, so close the page when you are done and keep the password in a password manager.

Strength. The bits shown are the length multiplied by log2 of the number of characters to choose from. They apply only to passwords made at random like this one.

Examples

  • 16 characters, all four kinds

A pool of 86 characters, about 103 bits: Very strong.

  • 12 lowercase letters only

About 56 bits: Fair. Add length or more kinds of character to make it stronger.

  • 20 characters without look-alikes

Easy to read aloud or type from paper, and still Very strong.

Frequently asked questions

Is the password sent or stored anywhere?

No. It is made in your browser and disappears when you close or reload the page. The site never sees it.

Is it really random?

It uses the browser's cryptographically strong generator, and avoids the small bias of a simple remainder by drawing again when a number falls in the uneven part of the range.

How long should my password be?

At least 16 characters for important accounts, and a different one for every account. NIST and CISA both put length ahead of complicated rules.

Why use a password manager?

You cannot remember many unique random passwords. A manager makes, stores and fills them in, so you only remember one long master passphrase.
