How to use Unix Timestamp Converter

How to use this tool:

  • Choose "Unix timestamp to date" and enter a number, or "Date and time to Unix timestamp" and pick a date.
  • With a timestamp, leave the unit on Detect, or say seconds or milliseconds.
  • With a date, say whether the time is in UTC or in your time zone.
  • Press "Use the current time" to start from now.

Details. A Unix timestamp counts seconds from 1 January 1970, 00:00:00 UTC. Detect treats 100 billion or more as milliseconds, so a 10-digit number is seconds and a 13-digit number is milliseconds. Results show UTC, ISO 8601, India (IST) and your own time zone.

Remember. A timestamp has no time zone. Only the way it is shown does.

Examples

  • 1700000000

14 November 2023, 22:13:20 UTC, which is 03:43:20 the next morning in India.

  • 1700000000000

The same moment, written in milliseconds.

  • 2147483648

19 January 2038, 03:14:08 UTC: one second past the largest signed 32-bit time.

Frequently asked questions

Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?

Count the digits. Ten digits is seconds and thirteen is milliseconds for dates around now. Detect uses this rule.

Why is there no time zone in a timestamp?

It names one instant that is the same everywhere. A time zone only matters when you show it as a clock time.

What is the year 2038 problem?

A signed 32-bit counter runs out at 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Systems that still use one will wrap to 1901.

Can I enter a date before 1970?

Yes. Those timestamps are negative.
