How to use Lumpsum Calculator

How to use this calculator:

  • Enter the amount you will invest once.
  • Enter the yearly return you expect. Try a cautious number as well as a hopeful one.
  • Enter the number of years.
  • Read the estimated value and the estimated gain.

Formula. Estimated value = P × (1 + r)^t, where P is the amount, r is the yearly return as a decimal and t is the number of years. Growth is compounded once a year.

Examples

  • ₹1,00,000 for 10 years at 12%

The estimated value is about ₹3,10,585, a gain of about ₹2,10,585.

  • The same amount at 8%

₹1,00,000 grows to about ₹2,15,892 in ten years.

  • One year at 12%

₹1,00,000 becomes ₹1,12,000, so the gain is ₹12,000, the same as the return you entered.

Frequently asked questions

Is the result guaranteed?

No. It assumes the same return every year, which real investments do not give. SEBI says there are no guaranteed returns and that past performance does not guarantee them.

How is this different from a SIP?

A lumpsum puts all the money to work from the first day. A SIP adds money month by month, so later instalments have less time to grow.

How often is the return compounded?

Once a year. This keeps the answer easy to check by hand.

Are charges, tax and inflation included?

No. All three would lower what the money is really worth to you.
