How to use Compound Interest Calculator

How to use this calculator:

  • Enter the amount you start with (the principal).
  • Enter the yearly interest rate.
  • Enter the number of years. Part years such as 2.5 work too.
  • Choose how often interest is added: yearly, half-yearly, quarterly, monthly or daily.
  • Read the final amount, the interest earned and the table of balances at the end of each year.

Formula. A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t), where P is the principal, r is the yearly rate as a decimal, n is how many times a year interest is added and t is the number of years.

Examples

  • ₹1,00,000 at 8% for 10 years, added yearly

The final amount is about ₹2,15,892, so the interest earned is about ₹1,15,892.

  • The same, added monthly

The final amount is about ₹2,21,964. Adding interest more often helps, but only a little compared with the rate and the time.

  • A 12% rate

At 12% a year added yearly, ₹1 grows to about ₹1.97 in 6 years, close to the Rule of 72's estimate of doubling in 72 ÷ 12 = 6 years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between simple and compound interest?

Simple interest is worked out only on the original amount. Compound interest is also worked out on interest already added, so it grows faster over long periods.

Which compounding option should I choose?

Use the one in the terms of your deposit or loan. If you are only comparing, yearly is the simplest.

Is the result guaranteed?

The maths is exact for the numbers you enter, but a real product may differ: rates can change, and tax and charges are not included.

Does it work for loans?

Yes, the same arithmetic describes interest that is added to what you owe. Real loans usually also have repayments, which this calculator does not include.
