How to use Discount Calculator
How to use this calculator:
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount in percent.
- If a second discount applies after the first, enter it too. Leave it empty otherwise.
- Read the price you pay, the amount you save and the effective discount.
Formula. Price you pay = original price × (1 − a ÷ 100) × (1 − b ÷ 100). The second discount is taken off the price after the first, so two discounts never simply add up: 20% and then 10% is 28% in total, not 30%. The order of the two does not change the price.
Examples
₹1,000 with 20% and then 10% off
You pay ₹720 and save ₹280, an effective discount of 28%.
₹2,000 with 25% and then 20% off
You pay ₹1,200. The effective discount is 40%, not 45%.
A single 30% discount on ₹2,500
You pay ₹1,750 and save ₹750.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 20% plus 10% not 30%?
The second discount is calculated on the already reduced price, so it takes off less than 10% of the original price.
Does the order of the discounts matter?
No. The final price is the same whichever discount comes first.
Does it include tax?
No. If tax is added after the discount, use the GST calculator on the discounted price.
How do I compare 'buy 3, get 1 free' with a percentage?
You pay for 3 of 4 items, so it is worth 25% off. Compare it with the percentage in the same way.
