Honda Cars India has named its first electric SUV for India the ALPHA and said it will debut on 2 December 2026. What is confirmed, and what is not yet announced.

In this article
Honda Cars India has announced that its upcoming electric SUV will be called the Honda ALPHA, with its global debut in India on 2 December 2026. The announcement came on 3 November 2026, according to Rushlane and Autocar India. Honda has not announced a price, range or battery size. This article is current as of 3 November 2026.
What Honda has said
- Name: Honda ALPHA, for the company's first electric SUV for India
- Debut: 2 December 2026, in India
- Production: Honda's Tapukara plant in Rajasthan
- Background: the SUV is the production version of the 0 Alpha concept shown at the Japan Mobility Show in 2025
Toshiyuki Yanagisawa, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, said the name reflects the company's push to bring advanced electric mobility to Indian buyers while keeping its focus on quality, reliability and driving enjoyment, as quoted by Rushlane. Reports say the name draws on the first letter of the Greek alphabet and signals a new beginning.
The new H mark
Honda used its redesigned H mark in Honda Cars India's official communication for the first time with this announcement. According to the reports, the ALPHA will be the first Honda model in India to carry it. Honda's website shows a teaser page for the ALPHA under its future-mobility section.
India as a production base
Rushlane reports that India will serve as Honda's global production base for this model and that the SUV will reach India before other markets. Testing across India began in March 2026 and covered highways, city traffic, rough surfaces, varied weather and charging infrastructure checks.
What has not been announced
Honda has not published the following, so any number seen elsewhere is a report or an estimate:
- Price and launch (on-sale) date
- Battery capacity and driving range
- Motor power and drive layout
- Full feature list
Autocar India says two battery options are expected, roughly 65 to 75 kWh, and a single front motor. It labels these as expectations, not confirmed figures. It also notes that spy pictures of test vehicles show a large central touchscreen and a separate digital driver display, while the final cabin has not been shown.
Debut is not the same as launch
A debut is the first public showing. A launch with prices and deliveries usually comes later. Honda has said a 2 December debut; reports describe a sales start in 2027, but Honda has not confirmed that date in the sources checked for this article.
Context
Rushlane notes Honda's 2026 launches so far include the City facelift in May, the ZR-V hybrid in July and the Elevate facelift in October, and that Honda plans 10 new models in India by 2030, including seven SUVs. It also reports Honda Cars India's October 2026 domestic sales at 7,609 units.
Why a name announcement matters
Manufacturers often reveal a model's name weeks before its debut. The name tells readers little about the vehicle itself; the useful facts come on debut day, when a company normally shows the final design, battery and feature list. Until then, anything beyond the name, the date and the plant is a report about test vehicles or an estimate by a journalist.
Readers comparing electric SUVs should therefore wait for Honda's own specification sheet. Autocar India lists the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Sierra EV, Maruti e Vitara and Toyota Ebella as electric SUVs already on sale or expected in the same space, but a fair comparison needs Honda's official range and price, which do not exist yet.
For ordinary readers the practical points are short. The ALPHA is an electric SUV, so it will be charged from a plug or charger instead of filled with fuel. Honda has said it is built in India, and Rushlane notes that the testing included charging infrastructure checks, which is the part of an electric car's use that depends most on where a person lives.
